A Mind is a Terrible Thing

It does things like…  squirrel!

Squirrels even distract rabbits

Seriously though… I’m in a bit of a flump today. No ambition, no desire to “get things done”.  It could be that it is absolutely gorgeous outside and the very idea of staying in to write a ROW80 check-in irks me.

And it is gorgeous outside.

Unfortunately, it is Sunday, and that means it’s time to review my progress for the past week.  What an awesome week this has been!

I mean, look at this progress:

  • Goal: working through three chapters weekly of James Scott Bell’s Plot & Structure (including exercises)
  • Progress: detoured progress here in the form of three hours working on developing my antagonists.  One thing I love about all my characters is that they aren’t good or evil but just people trying to get through their lives as best they know how.  That doesn’t mean they’re all nice people; one of my main protagonists goes through half the book intent on killing another of my protagonists.  Another of my ‘big three’, goes out of her way to see her beloved mentor gets brutally murdered.  I call them my protagonists, but it’s really just a matter of perspective…  right?
  • I’ve also started reading Syd Field’s highly recommended book Screenplay, mostly because it’s a library book, and I have a time limit for that where I don’t with Bell’s book.
  • Great Link to follow: How to build a Villain by Jim Butcher
  • Goal: catching up in my local critique group (including submitting something this week)
  • Progress: group is on hold for the month of April; however, I have opened up one of the pending files in my inbox to start critiquing it
  • Goal: typing two pages a day of old notebooks in
  • Progress: on track, despite having been slightly behind Wednesday
  • Goal: (VIG) Write new words daily! (the Five Sentences thingie)
  • Progress: Most days, the words have flowed fast and furious. Averaging my daily new story words, it seems I’m getting 1,134 words of new rough (very rough) draft story.  In addition, I’ve been filling up One Note and my Notes feature on my iPhone with all sorts of cool possibilities.  New ideas are definitely not one of my writing problems.

ROW80LogocopySo, it seems like I’m finding my rhythm again, and I’m having lots of fun with my characters.  Each extra moment I’ve spent with them has presented so many precious insights.  Sometimes silly, sometimes sweet things: like knowing that ‘Listii refuses to kill doe rabbits if he knows they’re nursing young, or that Vissellii has been a wallflower (not of her choice) at every festival or society dance she’s ever been to.

Final tally…  a pretty close to perfect week.  I’m feeling it now, however.  No energy.  Absolutely none…  So before I push myself to the next step, which is to add back in one of my beloved blog hops such as WeWriWa (Weekend Writing Warriors) or the Wednesday WIPpet, I’m going to maintain this pace without added commitments.  If I’m inspired by posting time for one of the challenges and I’ve gotten all my critiques for my local group finished and posted, then sure…  I may go for it.  But these goals are my first writing priority.

And at this point, my mind is saying “Don’t even think it.”  😦

Now that you’re done here, how about you give some love to our other great ROWers.

Let Them Pass

WIPpet Wednesday again? It seems like it was just last week that I–Oh, yeah, it was just last week, wasn’t it?  *blushes*

Anyway, I do have something to share with you all.  Once again, I have drawn from the Was Long Variation, probably the last piece of that I’ll be posting for a while if all goes according to plan (or unless people stage protests).  Eight, mostly small paragraphs…  Five for May minus thirteen for the day (5-13=8).  Our POV character here is Alanii; he’s talking with his physician about whether he should (or rather shouldn’t have) done something:

“He’d recover sooner.  Before you start berating yourself, don’t.  Captain Mirniia won’t be fit for duty in less time than it’ll take for us to leave this room.  If you hadn’t taken a second capsule, we’d have all three of you in bed.

Even empty, it speaks of pain and suffering

And if Fate agreed with the man, the door burst open with several Center staff rolling in another bed. On it, Valistii thrashed back and forth under the restraining straps that held him to the bed. The man’s convulsive motions more than once threatened to tip the platform over on its side. But if Valistii had any sense of the danger he posed to himself and the men and women helping him, Alanii could see no sign. The man’s eyes were open, focused on nothing, shot with blood and tears. The man’s face with twisted in terror and pain.

Alanii glanced at Koru. The man was already at his patient’s side placing a cautious hand over the Hastor’s temple and pulse points. After a few seconds, the physician waved to one of his assistants. “Get me 1 cc ADAS and prepare him for a drip.” The man’s expression turned grim. He went back and checked something on Kieri.

The younger man was equally straining now, despite his weakened state.

Alanii watched unable to even feel the horror he knew lay behind what he was seeing. Without announcing himself, he left the room. Why didn’t he feel lucky?

He started to head up to the isolab where they’d hooked up the cryotube from Audric’s ship. Behind him, the door opened quickly. “Sire, don’t leave. The Senior says he needs your help.”

He turned to look at the nurse with a baleful eyes. Koru needed his help… He could imagine for what. Even under the effect of the capsules, the Call existed. Or at least his remnants of it.

“Tell the Senior to let them pass in peace. I won’t condone torture, even for their lives.”

And there you go… Don’t know about you all, but I have a bad feeling about what happens next. Question is… do you want more of this story, or will you be happy to get back into Courting the Swan Song (I really, really need to get working on that)?

Either way, let’s all cheer our WIPpet Wrangler, KLSchwengel over at My Random Muse.  And if you would, take some time to visit the other WIPpeteers over at our linky.  Enjoy stories and fun…  Wednesday-style.

Rain, Rain… Coming Down

Pretty much the skies here

Rainy, dreary days, like today, sap the mental circuits.  I’ve stared at this monitor for almost two hours already, and I still don’t know what direction to take this post in.  I mean, it’s not a lack of writing (or ideas).  Creatively, life has been good, and the muses have been generous with their gifts.

What do I see?  Sunshine reflecting off a car window outside…  Ooh, sparks!  Will it be enough to kickstart the old gray matter?

Oh, it’s gone now.

But it was here long enough for me to read over the last few scenes I was writing in The Was Variation (hmm, I’ve got to stop calling it my Jayce and the Wheeled Warriors fanfiction; the story left that world nearly a novella’s worth ago and has dwelt solely with my storyworld since).  Looks like you’re going to get five small paragraphs from the fourth Variation “book” today:

In this excerpt, ‘Listii and Alanii have been dragged into the medical office of their military base for a not-routine check-up.  This is from ‘Listii’s POV; just for you, Shan.

“Glad to hear that,” he muttered. He gave Alanii a wry grin as the man looked on with an odd expression. He wondered if the man still envied him this. It wasn’t as if the device had done all they’d hoped. Except that he didn’t need to be conscious to take an arringtine pill, he still wasn’t going to make it too long without his ‘tianiel.

He knew he was wincing, nervous twitches running along his body as Koru took his readings, stimulating his system in various ways. When he’d first received the implant, he’d tried holding back his reactions. Now he just let them flow through and past him. It was another annoyance like any other in life. He’d volunteered to be the program guinea pig anyway. What right did he have to complain?

“What you smiling at, blue-eyes?” he grumbled. He hated being hooked in this way, hated it even more when others were around to watch it. Why in Her Name hadn’t Valary hadn’t taken ‘Myyu to another room yet? At least she was able to get up and leave when he caught her gaze and mouthed, ‘take him out’. Alanii was as stuck as he was at the moment.

Alanii was gnawing at his lip the way he did when he was wishing he had his pipe. But the man did stop long enough to give him a real smile. “Nothing serious. I just was wondering what we might see if we plugged you into one of the master viewers in the Council Hall. Do you get good reception?” The man’s mouth twitched as the tech next to him undid the tourniquet. He rolled down his sleeve before waiting for a bandage.

“A hell of a lot better than you’re going to when they let me up.” He glared at Alanii. Bad enough he had to deal with this. Did the man have to add bad jokes on top of it all? “You’re taking longer than normal, Senior,” he said after a bit. “What’s that damned screen telling you?”

It’s WIPpet Wednesday where we post a piece of our Work In Progress at this linky and offer support and constructive observations to our fellow WIPpeteers.  Jump on in and join us.  We’re a friendly group.  Thanks to Kathi at My Random Muse for hosting.

ROW80 Check-in

ROW80LogocopyOh, happy day!  Excepting this morning’s slow start, things seem to be on the upswing.  Guarded cheers…  Today’s been pretty much… well, not so up.

  • write every day; at the minimum, do 5 sentences new story, most of the first draft of my sponsor post, plus
  • finish a complete (rough) draft of Courting the Swan Song   more backstory on Andre; she’s becoming such a fun character to explore
  • make twice weekly blog posts (WIPpet Wednesdays and Some Thing 4 Sundays) not only the basics, but an extra post this week!
  • maintain active sponsor participation  check
  • energize myself with more physical activity  Easter Egg hunts, volunteer time, playgrounds….  I kept busy
  • reclaim my writing space no progress here
  • go through some piece of my electronic home (desktop, laptop, server space, Dropbox, etc.) nice shiny clean Inboxes
  • laugh more, hug my family more, share myself with friends more…  I could use some more of this today; it’s been a hard day, even if yesterday was full of cuddles….
  • attend chats and sprints on Twitter (at least one of each) two

Time to go now.  Tonight is the Boodle’s promotion to a Blue Belt in karate.  Need to get the boy soon and get him to the dojo for warm up.
