Back to Basics

Hooray, Thursday is here. That means it must be…

Well, okay, so I’m not on time today.

I took yesterday off for some (mostly) me-time. I think it helped. I’d been fighting a bit of a head-cold, and taking the break seems to have settled the sinuses nicely. A blessing when that happens.

Still, it is now beyond time for my ROW80 check-in and WIPpet Wednesday post. So in tradition with breaking tradition…

my ROW80 mini

Writing-wise this has been an incredible week. I confess, I haven’t always finished my StoryADay stories in a day (always within 24 hrs, but it seems I work best sleeping on them halfway through). That said, I’ve got a bunch of fun bits and pieces from in and out of my story world to explore further some day.

And… because the Boodle wants to share our stories at the same time, my plans for a Sunday PDF are being changed to a Friday post of stories. I may (still thinking on that) be posting them from my “name” blog. I won’t be posting everything. Some pieces I want to develop further. Some involve spoilers for the novels I’m working on now, and I don’t want to reveal too much too soon. I’ll try to share a line from everything.

Everything else is…  so/so.  I confess, I’ve made better friends with my inner-couch potato than is probably wise.  I haven’t even been Pokémon hunting as much.  Probably why the Boodle wants some “us-time” tonight…  I hope it doesn’t rain too soon.

The WIPpet

Today is a piece from a scratch piece I’ve been playing with to decompress. It started out a version of Courting the Swan Song that came to me after my characters all ganged up on me at once and said “It didn’t happen like that at all.” Basically, the original versions I’d been jotting down were too ‘nicey-nice’. To quote ‘Listii, “The brat weren’t capable of being as bad as all that.”

The Brat, in this case being, Alanii…

So, I started trying to incorporate this pieces they were telling me happened into my vision of their world. It was closer, and I find the combination of my creation and their reality a fun place to play. So, since I’ve been in a play and test things mood lately, I’m here to share eight small paragraphs from this new/old piece of CTSS:

“Did you have to tell Morvan about those idiots, ‘Listii?  You know what those hot heads are going to do, don’t you?”

He nodded. “Same as you, just more effectively.”

Visse glared at him. “I wouldn’t have tried to hurt them.”

“No. You’d have been hurt,” he said. “Lies like that need to be stopped–people who spread them must be too.”

“All you’ve done is make sure the lies get said behind closed doors, ‘Listii. You aren’t going to stop them from talking.”

He shrugged keeping his gaze straight ahead. “I’ve stopped those three.”

He was saved from more of her accusing looks by the welcome from the caller at the entrance to the slave stocks. He left his sister’s side just long enough to register for his bidding placard. The bag of bid chits he tied to his belt. Not that he didn’t trust his sister, but he knew full well that any troublemakers would think twice about trying something against him, where they might not be so smart regarding her.

They didn’t need to be kicked out of the market a second time for Vissellii gutting a man.

Hope you enjoyed that. Why not head over to the WIPpet linky and visit some our other awesome members now? Big cheers to Emily Witt for being our gracious hostess.

Somewhat Sweltering

Testing the steadiness of my hands with a new camera/phone

Okay, so those of you who live more equatorial than I do might not find my distress at the weather the past few days too dramatic, but taking a truck to the garage when the thermometer on the dash (outside temp) said 104°F because the air conditioning didn’t work and the thermostat for the cooling system was stuck anyway…

I wasn’t the only one sweltering that time.  My poor truck…  😦

There have been some excellent moments these past few days though.  All is well, and too soon, the snows and ice will come, and I’ll be wishing I didn’t have to bundle up so much just to be comfortable.

Just can’t please me….  😉

Row80 Check-in & Assessment

It hasn’t been the best week for actual goals, but sometimes things just happen.  Some of this is an awareness that things that have been in transition are finding their base-points and having to figure out how to best incorporate the new changes for our family.  Things are being done that have nothing to do with my ROW80 goals, but they need to be done.  Little things like my homeschooling paperwork for the Boodle since our hopes of getting him back to Catholic school are on hold for a time…

At least the Boodle has found he can keep in touch with some of his friends from there with email and online gaming.  And the occasional get-together is sweet too.

So, without further apologies…

  • CRAFT
    • Goal: spend ~three hours a week delving into writing craft related learning
    • Progress: still reading Steinbeck’s Journal of a Novel though I don’t think I reached exactly 3 hours this week.
    • Goal: Hand-write new words daily! (the Five Sentences thingie)
    • Progress: umm, yes, no, maybe…  not really sure here.  I wrote, but since it wasn’t daily, I guess I can’t call this a “check”
    • Goal: typing two pages a day of old notebooks into the computer
    • Progress: um, heck no
  • SOCIAL
    • Goal: maintain local critique group submission of excerpts and critiques during non-NaNoWriMo months
    • Progress: no
    • Goal: return to regular posting in the WIPpet and WeWriWa blog hops
    • Progress: WIPpet–yes; WeWriWa–on hold till September since I’ll be out of town next week and cannot promise visits.
    • Goal: sponsor duties for the ROW80 twice a week
    • Progress: on track
  • PERSONAL
    • Goal: Explore my creative side daily
    • Progress: not…well, maybe; I guess taking photographs counts
    • Goal: Daily languages (except Sundays)
    • Progress: on track
    • Goal: daily exercise amounting to a minimum of 30 minutes a day
    • Progress: easily (so nice to have something I’m doing well on here)
    • Goal: Discover something “new” to me (this one is easy, but daunting too, since I have to resist the urge to follow these cow trails)
    • Progress: A FB friend posted this link about a physicist and her choice of career change…  and I found myself delightfully mired for several days, absorbing her career and choice: http://nautil.us/issue/38/noise/this-physics-pioneer-walked-away-from-it-all
Just some goldenrod, but OH! Golden!

Just some goldenrod, but OH! Golden!

To add to that last goal:  I’ve spent discovering new things about my new phablet.  So far I’ve learned I do not like the Duolingo app for Android (so very glad I kept my old iPhone4 around as my puttering device), that I am even more in love with the stylus and native handwriting tools than I’d ever expected, and the camera is frighteningly capable.

Handwriting on a phone is nothing like handwriting in a notebook mentally for me.  There is a “processing difference” that happens when I see the text converted, when I know I need to be on guard for some of my quirky character names, etc.; I don’t create so much on the phone yet.  Perhaps that’s something whose time will come eventually.

That’s Life though…  a learning process.

Recovery Time

Real Life Pokémon Hunting at the Hubby’s Office

After several weeks of being on-edge, running close to non-stop…

I am stopping.

Not permanently, not even for a whole day even, I am stopping… for a time.

So… sorry, but no trite commentary, nothing profound, no lovely pictures (okay, so one–I HAD to try out my new phone!).  Today and yesterday were days to stop and reassess the state of things.  And to recover after far too much… stuff.

It was a good time to stop.  I made my CampNaNo wordcount goal on Friday, while having a mini-write-in with my Syster-for-Years, Shan Jeniah, before going to see the new Star Trek movie as part of her birthday celebration.

It was also the last day for my husband at a job he’d had for the past 16 years.

As a measure of change, this weekend seemed the ideal period to consider things and to note with some personal change too.

Row80 Check-in & Assessment

I haven’t anything much to say here either.  As far as goals go, this week was pretty much a bust.  I don’t even remember what I did most of the week now…  All is a blur of busy and do-this, do-that, go-here, go-there, answer-this, reply-to-that, return-X, buy-Y…

So…  I don’t really have much to say here today.

  • CRAFT
    • Goal: spend ~three hours a week delving into writing craft related learning
    • Progress: I… don’t know.  I really don’t know anymore.
    • Goal: Hand-write new words daily! (the Five Sentences thingie)
    • Progress:  I can say I’ve most succeeded on this goal, especially thanks to the wonderful gift my husband bought me (a Galaxy Note 5) because we’d thought my old phone had died.
    • Goal: typing two pages a day of old notebooks into the computer
    • Progress:  umm, I did some today, and I think I did a few days before Wednesday
  • SOCIAL
    • Goal: maintain local critique group submission of excerpts and critiques during non-NaNoWriMo months
    • Progress: thankfully we were still in “Camp” and I didn’t have to submit anything.  I still owe one critique
    • Goal: return to regular posting in the WIPpet and WeWriWa blog hops
    • Progress: I did a WIPpet, but no action on the WeWriWa crew; actually I suspect I need to delay that part of this goal another month, as August is when I’ll be offline out in the woods doing some real camping
    • Goal: sponsor duties for the ROW80 twice a week
    • Progress: on track, amazingly enough (except for that sponsor post!)
  • PERSONAL
    • Goal: Explore my creative side daily
    • Progress: I did have some doodling time Thursday–trying to figure out why all my faces look like corpses
    • Goal: Daily languages (except Sundays)
    • Progress: on track
    • Goal: daily exercise amounting to a minimum of 30 minutes a day
    • Progress: I made time for this; it kept me sane
  • Temporary! Goal: write and submit my sponsor post
  • Progress: Hahahahahahaha…  ouch.  I shouldn’t laugh like a madwoman.  It hurts the head.  :-/

That’s all to it.  Hopefully, I’ll have some real news on Wednesday.  At the very least, I will have another snippet of my most recent work in progress for your reading pleasure.
