Principles and Decency

MjAxNC04ZjBlYTU5ZmNiZjdiZjY4

Welcome back to another ROW80/WIPpet Wednesday post where I share the progress I’ve made towards my goals in the Round of Words in 80 Days challenge and snippet of my most recent Work In Progress with some other fellow writers for the fun of it.

ROW80

Small gains would be how I’d describe my progress since Sunday.  I’m in a bit of a tizzy in some ways.  I adjusted my goals somewhat since they were making me feel pressured to do too much at once, and yet…  what do I do once I know I have a lighter load?  I relax more and accomplish even less.

Maybe I need the pressure of having too much on my plate to get moving?  Maybe I needed the recuperation time?  Dunno…  a few days won’t make or change things in fulfilling my One Goal to Rule Them All.  And maybe I’ll learn something about myself on the way.

It is rather frustrating though that I haven’t started a drawing since last year 😉 and beyond looking at my assorted directories full of photos to upload two older drawings to my Deviant Art profile, I’ve not touched the non-writing creativity bits.

At least exercise and eating are improving.  And my average daily wordcount has rounded at 900 words…  though not all of it has been worthy of even story consideration.

WIPPET

Today’s WIPpet follows on Wrong, my post from last week.  Right now I’m trying to figure out what direction I want this piece to take (I’m totally pantsing this Jayce & the Wheeled Warrior fanfic).  For a few days I went on a huge “why does this have to be a fanfic at all” binge and wrote pages of character motivations and history to see if I could justify making it one (or not).  The fanfiction elements won out…  but we’re not touching it yet.  We’re still with ‘Listii in the middle of the night…

I offer you 10 sentences for today,  for January (1) and the day (9th).  And I gave you an extra paragraph of last week’s entry for context.

Before he dwelt to long on his lover’s actions, he set his feet on the floor. How? he wonder as he curled his toes. Two centimeters of wool pile and it still felt like he was stepping on ice.

Mincing his steps, he felt around for where Brü had hidden his clothes this time. Woman never could leave well enough alone. Didn’t even have the decency to apologize for making him late for classes. More than once she’d done that, and twice on an alarm… And ‘Listii refused to wear her husband’s old robes, even for a quick walk from her apartment to his.

There were some principles he hadn’t given up on yet.

After some searching and shuffling in the brisk air, he left Brüan’s room, expecting to make a mad dash to the bath. Instead, he paused, letting the subtle warmth of the hallway envelop him and melt into his chilled bones. He only moved when he heard a rustle from three doors away where Kainan looked to still awake, maybe reading or studying.

‘Listii didn’t feel like explaining to Brüan’s son yet again why he was coming out of her room naked.

I hope you enjoyed this sample of my writing.  If you’d like to see some more snippets from other authors  head on over to the WIPpet linky. WIPpet Wednesdays are hosted by Emily Wrayburn at Letting the Voices Out.

Wrong

Though it’s Thursday again, I have a WIPpet for you all.  First a check-in for the Round of Words in 80 Days writing challenge.  My goals are here at my name blog.

Yesterday, I posted a comment check-in to the FB group. This is a cut/paste of what I wrote plus…

Not a lot of progress. Had family over yesterday, spent time cleaning house. Did some blog updates and all my ROW80 visits. Explored some research of neurogenesis and how brain injury affects behavior, plotted out how this might relate to the talents and witchcraft among many of my characters,.. started writing up how one of my MCs deals with brain surgery after his wife’s death (yes, these things are related).

No fresh art except to study some drawing books and get an idea for how to draw hands better.

I also arranged a schedule with my accountability partner, Jennette Marie Powell. And I figured out one of the flaws I had in my goals for this round of words. Adjustments to come.

Baby steps….

WIPpet

Today WIPpet, as promised in Even Louder (my last post from Singer of the Swan Song for a while) is of a more fun bent, being from a JatWW fanfic I write when I need to decompress.  Today’s piece comes from what may be a new section opening for the Was Variation.  Fifteen sentences for 01/03/19…

15 = 01+03 – 1+9 – an extra 1 for being late so many times.

‘Listii caught himself just before he backhanded Brüan. For a moment he lay still, his arm shadowed in the glow of the streetlights.

Taking care to relax his tense limbs, he tried curling up against his pillows, bunching them close, tight, a buffer against…

Wrong. Everything felt wrong, awkward, out-of-place. Even before he tried punching the lumping stuffing into submission, he knew it wouldn’t help.

It didn’t. Might have even become worse.

Accepting the inevitable, he scooched over to his side of the bed and dangled his feet over the side. Next to him, Brüan rustle in a dream and clutched at his blanket. She already had the other two tangle about her. ‘Listii unwrapped himself and patted it toward her side of the bed, giving a wry glance at the woman as she gathered the discarded flannel to her chest and buried her face in it.

He swore she sighed his name before settling.

Before he dwelt to long on his lover’s actions, he set his feet on the floor. How? he wondered as he curled his toes. Two centimeters of wool pile and it still felt like he was stepping on ice.

WIPpet Wednesdays are hosted by Emily Wrayburn at Letting the Voices Out.  And if you’d like to join in, just do it.  The rules are simple.  Post a sample of your present work in progress to your blog that relates in some vague way to the date.  As you can see, you use some pretty crazy maths.  The real point is to have some fun with words and share the writing experience with others.

Another week, another ROW80 check-in plus WIPpet Wednesday post…

I’m on roll here.  Almost two months worth of posts again.  Yay me!

Seriously, yay me.  It’s hard to get back into doing things after a long hiatus, and even harder when Life has been busy piling on its blessings of extra things to deal with.  And of course, it’s the holiday season with its standard package of events and obligations…  and memories.

I don’t deal well with the holiday season.

My goals aren’t suffering for this burst of motivation.  I’ve managed, on average, around 800 words a day.  Most of it is brain dumps and plotting ideas, but it’s been good for exploring stories and feelings reactions…  New story is coming a bit slower, but I’ve managed to add around 100-300 words almost every day, just not every day.

For my creativity bursts, I’ve been doing some daily drawing practice, trying out techniques and seeing what I could come up with in 10-20 minute bursts of drawing.  As I used to draw from an image and then tweak to my tastes, having to free-style it has been an interesting challenge.    I’m learning more about what sorts limitations I work best within and how to work around them.

Limits seem to be the best creativity boosters I’ve found lately.  Trying to write or draw just “anything” always seems to become nothing.  But if I set a limit, a number of words or a posture…  somehow I can get “something” on the page.

I’ll have to start Instagraming the pictures so I can post them here as well as Facebook.

And yes, the rest of my goals, to type in pages and to get packing/house-clearing done are progressing…  slowly.

WIPpet

This week’s entry for WIPpet Wednesday is 14 sentences (plus one lead-in from last week’s post) of Singer of the Swan Song.  We’re still in the opening chapter., and I’m really hoping for feedback on whether this would “hook” you all as a reader.

Maths: 12/20/18…  add all the digits, then count two fragments as a sentence 😉

She felt herself start to fall and reached out again. “Mama!”

Smelly muck splashed about her as she landed face-first, just missing the paving cobbles. Her outstretched arm hit one, hard.

It hurt so very much, her breath caught in her throat. The hiccups almost came. ‘Tara forced them back. She wouldn’t cry. The boys had taught her that in their games. The more she cried, the more they’d torment her. But when she’d stiffened her lip and choked back the pain, they’d petted her, telling her how strong and brave she was. Just like them. Not like the twins’ snippy sister.

Her parents had sent her away because she wasn’t strong and brave.

But what if… ‘Tara didn’t know if she could be more scared than she was already, but she had cried a lot the day ‘Listii’d been hurt. Was Mama sending her away now too?

Interested in more? Interested in joining in? Being a WIPpeteer is pretty easy. First, you have to write something (that’s the hardest bit) and then you have to post it to your blog on Wednesday, using what we call “WIPpet Maths”… which really means, fudge around with the numbers on the date until you come up with something that fits what you’d like to share.
