#WeWriWa — A Scullery Maid

c1ea5-www_1 It’s a bloghop!

Good morning, and welcome to today’s Weekend Writing Warriors installment. The rules are simple enough if you’d like to participate:

  • Add your name and genre(s) to the most recent post on the WeWriWa site
  • Post a link to the WeWriWa site on your blog/Sunday post (must be done before 9am EST)
  • Keep your excerpt 10 sentences or less (8-10, no more!)
  • Visit other WeWriWa authors and experience their work

(Find a complete set on the WeWriWa page as well as links to pages of all the authors involved. Check it out.)

Two weeks ago (I am only posting these excerpts every other week because life is cray-cray), I posted the second of my pieces from the new opening of Courting the Swan Song: Puddings. This piece follows directly on that.

“Our Lady Kessalan demanded I attend her to discuss tomorrow’s market visit. She asked me to send you to her to attend her as soon as we finish here.”

Despite her asking, Vissse had not listened, sure whatever Kiriina would say would annoy her more. Instead she smiled slightly, picturing how her brother would laugh his head off if he could see her now, seeing how easy it could be to get under her skin. Either of her brothers would have … once. Her smile faded. That wasn’t likely to happen as long as she was stuck here, learning the high art of being a scullery maid.

Kiriina cleared her throat, instantly drawing Visse back to present and what she had said.

“My aunt called for me?”.

Thank you for reading; I hope you enjoyed the snippet. Coming up for WIPpet Wednesday, please enjoy another sample from Courting the Swan Song or perhaps another of my Works In Progress.

I’m sorry to say instead of the every other week schedule I’d planned for these posts, the holidays got in the way, and I missed posting last week. I suspect I’m not the only one who missed last week, but still…

This post follows right on the heels of my last post “I Didn’t Come To—”  the opening page of Courting the Swan Song, my fantasy romance and the first book of the Swan Song Series of books:

Though Visse knew better than to show the woman how aggravating she found her attitude,it was really too much. Furious she thrust the sausage in her hand down onto the tray with a slap. The ferocity of her action rocked bowl against her tray. Only a panicked grab kept both from capsizing and ruining the week’s grand feast. “Why in—”

Visse held the dishes steady a second, careful to not look up. She had no interest in seeing Kiriina or the perfectly innocent smirk she knew she would see. After a second, she began to reset the puddings so they were spaced neatly on the tray. “You were supposed to be here a demi past helping me. What kept you?”

Thank you for reading; I hope you enjoyed the snippet.  Be sure to check out other Writing Warriors at the link above.  If you liked what you read, be sure to check out other samples from the series in my WIPpet Wednesday posts.

I Didn’t Come To — a #WeWriWa post

It’s a bloghop!

Mornin’ All!

Welcome to my long-intended return to the Weekend Writing Warriors. Back when I stopped participating in this bloghop it was because I realized I couldn’t participate as fully as I wanted. Silly me. I loved this group (even bought some books because of it and have eventually joined the RWA because of the works I read here. So I will be returning, posting an installment, only twice a month now instead of trying to manage every week.

What is WeWriWa?  It’s a bloghop where authors post a small snippet of a piece of one of their stories.  There’s a bit more to it than that, but if you want the quick and dirty so you can jump on in, the rules are simple enough:

  • Add your name and genre(s) to the most recent post on the WeWriWa site
  • Post a link to the WeWriWa site on your blog/Sunday post
  • Keep your excerpt 10 sentences or less (8-10, no more!)
  • Visit other WeWriWa authors and experience their work

(Find a complete set on the WeWriWa page as well as links to pages of all the authors involved. Check it out.)

Today’s snippet is a new beginning of sorts.  In many ways…   For today, I am offering 10 sentences from the new opening for the Swan Song Series: Courting, a fantasy romance I’m preparing for entry to the Golden Heart Awards.  I wouldn’t be doing it if you all hadn’t inspired my interest in the romance genre.

“This better not take long—oh!” The woman stood in the larder entry, her full skirts and elaborate coif nearly blocking all the light coming down the staircase “Disgusting!”

Wrist-deep in intestines and mince, Visse closed her eyes. Where had the woman been? Here she’d been stuffing puddings for the past demi alone, and now that she was nearly done, Her Glory had finally deigned to arrive, dressed for a party as opposed to pantry duty.

“Preparing Lady Kesselan’s special sweet sausage for the feast tomorrow. Your portion is over there.”

Visse watched as Kiriina stood, staring at the stool Visse had directed her to, eyes blinking madly. “I didn’t come to—.”

Thank you for reading; I hope you enjoyed the snippet. If writing-related challenges and projects are your thing, check out the ROW80 for how to write and live and WIPpet Wednesday for more snippets and characters to love.
